An installation view of Post Moderns at Laurence Sterne Trust at Shandy Hall, 2019

POST MODERNS

Post Moderns is based on the 50 texts found in the Penguin Modern Box Set (2018), which celebrates the pioneering spirit of Penguin’s publishing. The collection includes seminal works by Samuel Beckett, Truman Capote, Allen Ginsberg, Dorothy Parker, George Simenon, and Susan Sontag amongst others.

Consisting of 50 separate artworks, each one responding to one book from the collection, the project includes texts pieces, drawings, embroideries, prints and altered books.

An exhibition of the full set of works, was held at Laurence Sterne Trust, Shandy Hall, York, in September 2019, and Eagle Gallery, London in February 2020. Work from the series won the Minnesota Center for Book Arts Prize People’s Book Art Award in 2020.

A review of the exhibition by Michael Hampton can be found in issue 95 of The Penguin Collector. In addition, a further essay by Professor Simon Morris and Dr Sean Ashton at Leeds Beckett University can be found here.
